The all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is known by several names, the three wheeler, the four wheeler, a quad bike or simply a quad. New to the bunch is a six-wheeled AATV which is a two passenger vehicle that still contains many of the current characteristics of the regular ATV. These vehicles are operated much like motorcycles. They all have handlebars for steering, a seat the drivers straddles and low pressure tires. The vehicle is street legal in some parts of the United Kingdom, but is not legal in anywhere in the U.S., Canada nor Australia though the ATV is very popular in these places.
A lot of apparel is worn for safety while riding ATVs whether its while competing or joyriding. The apparel has to be the right type for the terrain you will be riding the ATV on. Under headgear falls several pieces of apparel that is worn that consist of different types of helmets, goggles, and facemask. When shopping for helmets there are three types to consider, full face helmets, open face helmets, or modular helmets. For maximum protection the full face helmet is the recommendation. Modular helmets are similar to full face helmets. The difference is the coverage that secures the face is able to flip-up when it is not needed. Open face helmets are very self descriptive. The face is open except for a shield that folds down over the face much like the modular helmet. The goggles are worn with most full face mask, because the part of the face left unprotected is the eyes. Facemask are worn with either for an extra bit of protection to the face.
Another piece of apparel worn is gloves or mittens. With gloves there is a choice of textile riding gloves, trail gloves, or the mittens for the winter.
